Dashain Festival

Dashain Festival

Overview And Highlights

Dashain is the biggest festival of Nepal. It falls during October-November of the Gregorian calendar. Dashain marks an arrival of a pleasant weather and balmy climate. The skies are clear blue and visibility is crystal with mild sunshine throughout the day. This is also a season for a variety of flowers to bloom. Trekkers and Mountaineers are perhaps most mesmerized by the sight of the Himalayas and greenery while traveling into the hilly and mountainous areas of Nepal.

Dashain is celebrated all over Nepal and by peoples of all sects. Dashain has its roots in the historical annals of Hindu religion and is a celebration of the victory of Lord Ram over demon Ravana. The festival occurs directly after the harvesting time and thus is a time of plenty of eating and merriment. The festival is often the only time in a year when family members get together, receive blessing from elder members and spend time playing swings, dancing and singing and eating delicious food. The festivity also is an occasion to wear new clothes, especially among children and youths.
